Established Platforms Create New Application Categories

Mr. Krauskopf will speak about technology trends leading to new application categories. His current work involves a new application category for VoIP and XMPP technologies while his past work included new applications based on IRC and TCP. Mr. Krauskopf will also talk about the ultimate application, the World-Wide-Web which grew out of previous platforms and became the ultimate application platform itself. This talk will include some technical detail (and some acronyms), but does not expect the audience to have any previous experience with the guts of any of the technologies described.

TIMOTHY K. KRAUSKOPF is CEO of Olivia Greets, a technology development firm in Chicago, providing virtual interaction systems using Voice-over-IP (VoIP) as a platform. In transportation, he founded Freight Zone, a software/technology company and Round Lake Freight, a truckload freight company. He has held a variety of management and technical roles dealing with the Internet and high technologies. This includes Vice President in the Internet Software and Content Group at Motorola, Inc., leadership positions at startup companies Parlano, Inc., and PCQuote.com, Inc., and Head of Information Services at The Field Museum in Chicago. Mr. Krauskopf was also a co-founder of Spyglass, Inc., which produced the forerunner to Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser, Spyglass Mosaic. He serves on the boards of Northwestern University and the Aspen Institute and is a member of the Chicago Entrepreneurship Hall of Fame.

Mr. Krauskopf holds a bachelor's degree from Northwestern University and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management. He also holds a master's degree in computer science from the University of Illinois.

For more detailed information on the meeting see the February Dinner Meeting.

Meeting Attendance

When you make a reservation for a dinner meeting please make every attempt at attending the meeting or canceling at least 24 hours ahead of time. If you do not cancel in time and are a no show, the Calumet Section still has to pay for your plate. For this reason we will be instituting and enforcing a policy of billing no shows for the dinner cost. IEEE and ISPE are both volunteer organizations and as volunteer organizations losing money at dinner meetings due to no shows is not budgeted. We appreciate your responsibility in observing this new meeting policy.

Volunteers Needed

The Calumet Section is always looking for volunteers. New people bring a new viewpoint to the Board. Fresh ideas are always a good thing. The Board has a few committee positions available along with the position of Secretary.

A position on the Board of Directors is a rewarding experience. The average Board Member only spends a few hours a month doing IEEE activities. There are only 2-3 Board Meetings a year.

Other Positions that are available are Membership Chairman, Engineer’s Week Chairman, and Professional Activities Chairman.

Other than the Officer positions we are always looking for people who would be willing to volunteer as a member of a committee. Committees such as Engineer’s Week depends on numerous volunteers.

Please do not assume everything is done and your help is not needed. Volunteer today!
