April Topic: Engineering Ethics

Engineers are faced with different situations on a daily basis while practicing engineering. This meeting will review ethics and professional responsibility as they pertain to the practice of engineering. The rules of professional conduct will provide moral and ethical guidance to engineers in their decision making process. Most importantly, it will provide engineers with insight on how to respect and protect their profession with utmost professionalism.

Purdue Calumet Chancellor Emeritus Howard Cohen stepped down last summer after heading Purdue Calumet for 10 years. Enrollment during his tenure climbed from 9,103 to a record-setting 10,133 while the proportion of full time undergraduate students has increased from 54 percent to 66 percent. His signature academic achievement was Purdue Calumet's implementation of an innovative experiential learning program required by all baccalaureate degree-seeking students. Howard Cohen is an experienced instructor of engineering ethics and his philosophical interests have focused on ethics for the professions and social philosophy. He is active in various community and board activities and is the author of two books and multiple articles. Mr. Cohen earned a B.A. from the University of Minnesota and both an M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University.

For more detailed information on the meeting see the April Meeting Flier.

Meeting Attendance

When you make a reservation for a dinner meeting please make every attempt at attending the meeting or canceling at least 24 hours ahead of time. If you do not cancel in time and are a no show, the Calumet Section still has to pay for your plate. For this reason we will be instituting and enforcing a policy of billing no shows for the dinner cost. IEEE and ISPE are both volunteer organizations and as volunteer organizations losing money at dinner meetings due to no shows is not budgeted. We appreciate your responsibility in observing this new meeting policy.

Volunteers Needed

The Calumet Section is always looking for volunteers. New people bring a new viewpoint to the Board. Fresh ideas are always a good thing. The Board has a few committee positions available along with the position of Secretary.

A position on the Board of Directors is a rewarding experience. The average Board Member only spends a few hours a month doing IEEE activities. There are only 2-3 Board Meetings a year.

Other Positions that are available are Membership Chairman, Engineer’s Week Chairman, and Professional Activities Chairman.

Other than the Officer positions we are always looking for people who would be willing to volunteer as a member of a committee. Committees such as Engineer’s Week depends on numerous volunteers.

Please do not assume everything is done and your help is not needed. Volunteer today!
