Speaker: Dr. Kevin Bowyer

Dr. Kevin Bowyer currently serves as Schubmehl-Prein Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. His recent research activities focus on problems in biometrics and in data mining. Particular contributions in biometrics include algorithms for improved accuracy in iris biometrics, face recognition using three-dimensional shape, 2D and 3D ear biometrics, advances in multi-modal biometrics, and support of the government's Face Recognition Grand Challenge, Iris Challenge Evaluation, Face Recognition Vendor Test 2006 and Multiple Biometric Grand Challenge programs.

Topic: Biometrics

Biometrics is the study of how to identify people by their physical or behavioral characteristics. Face recognition and finger print identification are common examples, but the texture pattern in the iris is claimed to potentially be even more powerful as a means of identification. This talk will describe how iris biometrics works, what it is used for, and present experimental results from some recent iris biometrics research at the University of Notre Dame. No prior knowledge of biometrics, pattern recognition or computer vision is required to understand and enjoy this talk.
